An Ode to the Pineapple

Emilie Kyle

During even the shortest of winters, we would love to get away to the balmy beaches of the Caribbean. When schedules or wallets don't allow for travel, we can always look at pictures of turquoise waters and pink sand dotted with colorful umbrellas and dream.

Mmm'kay, we know that doesn't cut it. {shakes head}

Sunny yellow and juicy pineapples instantly perk up the winter doldrums. The ultimate symbol of hospitality (especially in the South), the pineapple has a centuries-old history of warm welcome. Columbus was welcomed to a Carib Indian village with food, which included the sweet pineapple. If we fast forward a couple hundred years to successful hothouse development of the pineapple in Europe, it quickly became the King of Fruits. Expensive to grow, the pineapple had royalty hooked. Legend has it that sea captains from the East Coast would sail to the Caribbean and return with goods from the islands. To signal their safe return, they would place a pineapple on their front post, welcoming neighbors and friends to visit and hear of the travels over food and drink. Hospitality became a huge component of the social construct of Colonial America. Families of means welcomed guests into their homes and to their dinner tables with showy table-scapes of food adorned with fruit and crowned with a pineapple.

How can you not love their patterned exteriors and spiky headdresses? We've been spotting them all over the place and wanted to share our latest obsession. Here is our ode to the pineapple!

How to Create a Holiday Wreath - Our First Video!!

Cassandra Reinhart

Wintry Holiday Wreath

Wintry Holiday Wreath

Don't you just love the feeling of accomplishment you experience after completing a project on your lengthy to-do list? Well, holiday shopping and decorating are probably somewhere on that list, and whether you'd be making one for yourself or gifting one to a friend or family, we think that creating a wreath to jazz up someone's front door is a great way to spread some holiday joy! Since it can be difficult to figure out where to start a projector even how to make it workwe decided to offer some DIY inspiration by designing a wreath for the office in a tutorial, "how-to" fashion.

Step 1: Gathering materials

  • Real or artificial wreath
  • 24 gauge floral wire and/or glue gun (depending on selected wreath and decorations)
  • Wire cutters
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon (2-3" depending on wreath size)
  • Decorative elements
  • Optional: battery-powered, LED light strand

Step 2: Laying out décor

There are infinite ways to design a wreath. However, tried and true methods yield beautiful results. If you decide to go with clusters and/or focal points for your wreath (such as large poinsettias and bows), we recommend using the rule of thirds. Asymmetry and random arrangements of berries, bows, ornaments, and any other elements you've selected are also aesthetically-pleasing options. Our wreath utilizes three clusters of both natural and artificial elements, topped with a multi-loop bow.

Step 3: Making the bow

If you aren't particularly bow-savvy, we highly recommend watching this video!

Step 4: Attaching décor

Time to ready your tools! If you're lighting your wreath, go ahead and do that before you start attaching elements. For a natural wreath, you'll need to use floral wire. Hot glue works well for an artificial wreath but won't hold particularly well on a real one. When you've finished wiring or gluing, give your wreath a good shake-down to make sure everything is secured.

Step 5: Hanging your wreath

You have a few options for hanging your wreath. You can use an easily-purchasable door hanger, floral wire, ribbon, or fishing line.

Thanks for tuning in! We hope that this wreath-making tutorial has given you the know-how and inspiration needed to create something beautiful of your own! Whether you decide to go with snow-kissed, natural elements, sprinkles of ornaments and iced berries, elegant greens and florals, or something fun, bright, and glitteryyour festive wreath will add some life and cheer to any space that's just begging to be adorned!
